Our Story
South Suburban Asphalt is a family-owned company based in Prior Lake, Minnesota, with more than 50 years of experience serving the Twin Cities. Founded in 1970 by Glen Johnson and his father as Johnson Blacktop, the company soon became known as South Suburban Asphalt—built on hard work, quality craftsmanship, and lasting relationships.
Glen remains actively involved in daily operations, working alongside the paving crew while enjoying time with his wife Maxine, their three children, and nine grandchildren. In 2016, Glen’s son Nick became the majority owner, leading the company’s continued growth while maintaining the hands-on standards that built its reputation. Nick and his wife Sarah are raising their five boys while overseeing paving operations and ensuring every project meets the highest level of quality.
Today, South Suburban Asphalt partners with leading homebuilders such as Pulte, Keyland, M/I Homes, Onetenten, Eternity, and Loomis to deliver high-quality driveways for new homeowners. We also complete more than 500 residential and commercial projects each year and work closely with top property management companies to provide dependable parking lot maintenance across the Twin Cities.
In 2022, we reached an exciting milestone with the opening of our new headquarters in Webster, Minnesota. This state-of-the-art facility allows us to better serve our customers and support our growing team.

With SSA since 2018; handles scheduling and office operations after previously working on the paving crew.
